week five

LECTURE:

In today lecture we look at Search Engine, which is a web-based program that crawls the internet, creating indices of websites, usually from the textural information contained on them. Examples of search engine are Google, Yahoo, AOL, Alta vista and Alltheweb.
Problem with search engines
-Misuse of the page scoring.
-Including of current “broken” links in a list of results to a query.
-Determining how deep to “tunnel” through lower ranked pages.
-Building enormous indices that include erroneous, irrelevant and out-dated results to user.
Search Engine interface allows the user to open the result in a new Brower Tab or window.
Search engine interaction types of queries are keyword, phrase, Boolean, etc.
Directories are human-edited. Example of reliable search directories are DMOZ, google and yahoo directory, look smart and about.

TUTORIAL:

a,List four strategies and explain their effectivenee.

1,searching by means of subject Directories;such as google and yahoo directory.Give a broad range of information. This suject-tree style catalogue arange the web into topics and each topic is list of subtopics and so on,which break down the topic to be more specific.

2,searching by searching engine; web documents are retrieved by programs and analysed.in search engine, keyword, phrase and other search tips are use to search information.

3,creating a search statement; This enable you to get a reasonable solution of what being search. When using this method, keep the following tips in mind;Be specific example,Hurricane Hugo, use nouns and objects as keywords, put most important term first and use at leastthree keywords.

4,Search tips;search tips work with search engines in their basic search option.search tips are use to help finding what you want.the commo search tips use are plus & minus, double quotation marks (" "), truncation (or stemming) and wildcards,Tips for Boolean Searches and so on.

Summary:

What i learn is that there is lot of information online, but need a searching strategies and style and skills in order to get the full text.Poor searching skills will result to failure, due to lack of sufficient information.

Reading 1 Summary- ‘Robert Harris-Web Search Strategies’

Internet search Tips and strategies

The internet has a large quality of information, with a lot of the newsgroups and web page. But to find quality information, you need to evaluate the web you using effectively. Search tips and strategies mostly work together. Creativity can help to generate some synonyms to use when searching the topic. There are several methods to be used in order to obtain enormous quality information. Using search tips and strategies lead to a good research, it’s also good to take time and read over the questions and understand it and plan how to commence your research. Before you begin searching it is very important to understand how information is stored and accessed on the web. There are three categories which the information of the web is kept. These are: the free visible web, the free invisible web and paid database over the web. Different search tools such as search engines and directories are used. Search engines consist of the interface which you type in a query. Directories are categorized lists of sites indicated by human editors. Directories are smaller compare to search engines.

Reading 2 Summary- ‘ The History of the Internet: (Chap 4- Search Engines)’

Week 5 Reading Two

In 1990 the first search engine finding and retrieving computer files was developed by the McGill University. The large institutional computers placed their data and program documents (files) into two categories. These result in restriction of download of any files because the categories was to open and closed which uses password in order to logged in. the method use to find information of the net were directories and search engines. Directories are lists of sites, chosen by people which work like a library book. Search engines are the google, yahoo etc which you submit your research term to different search engines and gives you a number of pages to look through. Databases are the online journal articles, which are recent. And library catalogued are the printed information which is classified are catalogued by the data on its cover.

Reading 3 Summary- ‘Search Engine Optimization for Companies’

Search engine optimisation (means make the best or most effective use of).
- Search engine optimisation, analyse website to find out if the website is applicable for search engine optimization. This is because most of small business web sites lack sufficient descriptive text or have navigation problems.
- Search engine optimisation, correct any keywords which are misspelled and send a list of keyword phrases that might be used for the site on a search engine. Search engine optimisation, also set your benchmark, link popularity and measuring progress for your web site. However, search engine optimisation check website to attract the user and trust it.

week four

LECTURE:

In the Lecture covered the following;

Internet vs web.

-on the net: you find computers and connections are cables between computers.

-on the web: you find documents, sounds, videos, information and connections are hypertext links.

web can not work with out net.

Historical perspective of the web:

wed was developed by a researcher Tim Berners-lee in 1989, this was to facilitate sharing research information.

web is a uniform/universal of accessible datas stored on computers throughout the world and available on the internet.

WWW - the World Wide Web.

TCP/IP - Transmission control

protical/ internet protocol

HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol

DNS - Domain Name System

URL - Uniform/ Universal Resource Locator

WWW is the content of a network of computers using TCP/IP to communicate between each other.

common address used are; .com, .org, .net, for domain`s international and .au, .uk, .nz for country codes.

web browsers are programs that allow users to access and explore the pages of the WWW.

TUTORIAL:

How have the websites attempted to appear authentic?
This websites are well designed and written like other fact web that are used. The websites have links, the are updated and have contact like other fact websites.

Four clues that give away each site as being a spoof?

Site http://www.haggishunt.scotsman.com/.

1,You can't figure out the site, because the site is name Haggis hunt, but the animal there is platapus, this is to make the site look real, even though the animal picture's used is not the real haggis hunt.

2,Put games section on the site to attract people, though the games are not working.

3,The site is full of Advertisement. To send a message to people that, the site has many links.

4,Business link supported by UK goverment. So that people will thinks its being supported by the government.

Site http://www.molossia.org/.

1,Government information;the nation's constitution is made up five excutive members, which is impossible for a real nation.

2,This site is made up,example, look at the minsters of the nation, such as minster of sand,Rocks and dust storms.

3,History.;the history was not given in datails and what given sound false, example from history,"the molosian nation was founded on may26th, 19771."there is no year such as 19771 in the calendar history.

4,Culture. Again the site has nothing on culture, istead, full of geographic information and discription of the land features.

Before visiting http://www.martinlutherking.org/, what did you expect to find on it based on the URL?.

obviously since the site is for organisation, it should contain government information, history,

culture and Martin's history.

After visiting the site; The site was personal,it stored the historical of Martin Luther, what he does, how, when and where he was killed. Also touch on justice.

After researching on Martin Luther King, what do you think of the website?.The information on the site is bias and full of plagiarism.

Reading 1 Summary- ‘A brief history of the internet’

A brief History of the Internet.
Definition: Internet is a world wide broadcasting capability
a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaborating and interaction between individuals and their computers.
Internet is the most sucessful for researching and developing information needed.
The origins of the internet
Because of the technological evolution that began with early research on packet switching and the ARPANET ( and related technologies). Research continues to expand along several dimensions, such as higher level functionality.
Series of memos was the first recorded description that was enabled through networking, this was written by J.C.R. Licklinder of MIT in August 1962, discussing " Galactic network" concept.
In 1966 Roberts also went to DARPA to develop the computer network concept and gathered his plan for the " ARPANET", published in 1967.
ARPANET grew into the internet. Which based on the idea of multiple independent networks.
In 1961 Kleinrock shown tge packet switching which was more efficient switching method.
After DARPA in 1972 Kahn shortly introduced the idea of open- Architecture networking.
Now, internet act as a collection of communities, technologies and it`s success largely attributable to bolt satisfying basic community needs.
In the late 1970`s the internet growth increased massively and was accompanied by a growth in the size of the interested research community.

Reading 2 Summary- ‘ History of the World-wide Web’

History of the internet, internet for historians
(And just about everyone else).

How do we explain inventions & innovations? The History of the internet for historian’s information composed of five massive chapters which may be hard to summarise all. If interest to read more about this topic, yo can visit http://www.let.leidenunity.nl/history/ivh/frame-theorie.html

Chapter one covered, the development of computers till 1960s. The internet is a scientific new development that enables communication and transmission of information between computers at different areas (Griffiths, 2002). Basically this chapter explain how ARPANET was created and how things changed from ARPANET to internet and from internet to World Wide Web.
